On Sunday, the rematch occurred, Swiss Roger Federer faced Spainiard Rafael Nadal in what is proclaimed to be the greatest epic match in Wimbledon history, it also marked the longest Wimbledon final in history, playing 4 hours and 48 minutes.
"Probably the best, yes," said the 22-year-old Spaniard. "When I won for the first time the French Open it was unbelievable, too. I don’t want to compare Grand Slams, but Wimbledon is special for everybody. Tradition, everything. For me, it’s more surprise to win here than the French."
The skies were gloomy, in which the downpour interrupted the match, causing two rain delays. However, Nadal is no longer the King of Clay, he’s the King of Wimbledon by dethroning Federer, to snap his Wimbledon winning streak at 40 matches and overall grass court streak at 65 games.
There has been a multi of great rivals in the great game of tennis, Bjorn Borg-John McEnroe or McEnroe-Jimmy Connors or Boris Becker-Edberg or Pete Sampras-Andre Agassi and now Federer and Nadal.
At the end of the match, Nadal dropped to the grass before walking to the net to congratulate the five time Wimbledon champion, then he climbed into the players’ guest box to embrace the moment by shaking the hands of Prince Felipe and Princess Letizia of Spain and grabbed the Spanish flag, hoisted the flag as an honor.
"It’s impossible to explain what I felt in that moment," Nadal said after the Duke of Kent presented him with the winner’s trophy. "Just very, very happy to win this title. For me, it is a dream to play in this tournament. But to win, I never imagined something like this."
Nadal, the winner of four consecutive French Open Championships, finally earns a taste of Wimbledon and a meaningful defeat on grass. Nadal, significantly, becomes the first Spainish man to win at the All England Club since Manolo Santana in 1966 and Nadal is also marked the first player to sweep the French Open and Wimbledon men’s titles in the same year since Bjorn Borg in 1980.
Aside from Nadal’s celebration, Federer only converted one of 13 break points, to fall short in his bid to set two milestones. He failed to surpass Borg by winning a sixth consecutive title or tying Willie Renshaw’s record setting of six in a row from 1881-86.
The longest Wimbledon final in history, is the greatest Wimbledon final. However, Federer a great tennis player on grass and Nadal a great clay court player, but Nadal and Federer have proven that they are the greatest tennis players in this era. And Nadal is no longer a clay court threat but a grass court threat.
The greatest Wimbledon final, will open another chapter in the history books. John McEnroe, a three-time Wimbledon champion and a television broadcaster at the tournament.
"This is the greatest match I’ve ever seen," said McEnroe.
